Burj Khalifa

On a trip to Dubai, I’m not going to miss the chance to go to the tallest building in the world! I had booked the Burj Khalifa tickets in advance to avoid tickets being sold out. I actually purchased an Express Admissions ticket through Groupon….but I forgot to read into the fine prints. My original plan was to enjoy the view of the sunset from the top, but the Groupon ticket is limited to admissions before 1 pm. Oops. On the bright side, we got to skip the long line. If you decide to go with a regular ticket, make sure to book ahead of time so you can select the time slot you want. And if you are an early bird, you can enjoy sunrise visits from 5:30 am every Friday and Saturday.

After some quick intro on the building, we were taken to level 124 on a very fast elevator. There is an outdoor area on this floor where you can feel the height of the building from the sun and the wind, but there is high glass all around the area so it’s safety is not a concern. You can also take the stairs up to the 125th floor, where there are less people, and there is a resting area for you to sit down for a minute. You can also pay a bit extra and go up the 148th floor, where there is a SKY lounge. We didn’t do that as we were ready to grab some food at the mall at that point.

On the way down, we realized our Groupon deal actually includes a ticket to the “Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style” exhibition. We were at the exhibition for about half an hour to an hour. I’m not a huge fan of James Bond so I wasn’t particularly into the exhibition, but I’m sure a film fanatic would appreciate the exhibition as many original props and costumes were displayed.

We spent the rest of the day shopping at the Dubai Mall. After sunset, we walked out of the mall towards the Souk Al Bahar. The bridge connecting the two is a great spot to catch the fountain show.  The show happens every 30 minutes from 6 to 11 pm. It reminds me of the show at the Bellagio at Las Vegas, but bigger of course. Everything is just grander in Dubai….

Style Tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes. Since you’ll be entering from the Dubai Mall, chances are you’ll have to across at least half of the mall to get to the entrance of Burj Khalifa. And you’ll probably want to shop at the mall before/after seeing the Burj Khalifa, so I’ll say skip those heels.

Key Takeaways

  • Make sure to enter the Burj Khalifa from the Dubai Mall. That is the only entrance to the observatory deck. We made the mistake of walking outside the mall and venturing to the actual Burj Khalifa building, only to be turned away by the guard. Save yourself the extra 40 minutes of walking!
  • Book your tickets in advance.
  • If you’re a James Bond fan, the exhibition is still going on until end of April, 2017.
